Robert,
The actionscript virtual machine which is in 8.5 is a *completely new*
implementation of actionscript - the bytecode will be substantially, if not
completely, different. It's designed to use JIT compilation and all sorts of
Java style performance enhancements. The 8.5 player will continue to support
As2, by having a copy of the old AVM as well. However, the script
performance improvements will only be accessible to AS3.
