You can't hide the icons... But you can keep tortoise from scanning to
update them (where the icon gives you real time status of the file). I
found that the update scans were killing windows.
Right click Tortoise SVN > Settings > Icon Overlays and uncheck
"Indicate status..."

For some reason I can't turn them off. Do you have to restart before you
see them affected?
Also, I am a bit confused, do you create one big repository d:/repo or
several small repository per project
d:/projects/project/project-repo
