Thanks for the post!
You're definitely paranoid!
Sorry about the warnings in the new player - this is the first we've heard
Just so you know - it doesn't check with every test. It checks only once
when the AsUnit Ui panel is opened. I felt that the concerns (that I too
would share) would probably be outweighed by the benefits of being notified
directly when a new version is released.
As you requested, I DEFINITELY wanted to make that check optional but it
turned into a question of time and energy vs. community desires...
Now that it's been brought up, the upcoming release is probably not going
to have this feature because the rest of the functionality will be built in
XUL - which has it's own facility for checking for updates.
If you're especially interested in getting rid of the check, you can
definitely grab the sources and compile the swf without that code. I believe
you can simply do a search for "load" and comment the offending line.
We are definitely not a marketing organization so we don't know anything
specific about anyone using AsUnit, but thanks to that check, I can tell you
that there are about 300 to 400 unique users using AsUnit on a daily basis.
I'm not sure if this is high or low, but it's definitely more encouraging
An unrelated bit of data from sourceforge usage stats, we've had 4,479
downloads since our launch in May of 2004.
(OK - I downloaded about 4,478 of those!)

Ok, i found it in the sources, which are available at
It seems like ASUnit is calling home to check for a new version.
