Statically linking in a GPL'd (or LGPL'd) library is without question
a derivative work. The GPL very explicitly states verbatim "This
General Public License does not permit incorporating your program into
proprietary programs."

GPL is definitely not an appropriate license for libraries unless you
are a hard-line GPL fanatic.
