as I said sometime ago I can provide mirroring (that could be used as
a kind of backup)

I personally looked at a tons of different backup solution
Amazon S3 beat everything imho so I think I agree with Rob :)

for the automation you can use http://www.jungledisk.com/
(drive letter using WebDAV, encryption, can work with rsync, etc.)

and why do you want to go with a database,
flat-files + subversion + hook scripts can do wonders :D
