[osflash] What happened to fla files?

Well, we're probably getting into semantics here. Originally you said
"the primary use of the Flash IDE is creating timeline animations".
What you seem to be saying here is that the Flash IDE is the primary
tool used in creating timeline animations.
A subtle change in wording, but very different meaning. The first
implies that most people just use Flash to create tweens. But for many
people it is their primary application development tool.

None, because the FLA format is not open. This will start to change in
Flash CS4 with XFL.

I don't think you'll be able to make MXML components that will work in
Flash IDE. I could be wrong, but currently you can't compile MXML in
flash. People already are making AS3 components that work in Flash.
Not sure what you mean by "return to its roots". I would consider
Flash's "roots" as being timeline animation. :)
I don't think Thermo is going to have much direct impact on Flash.
Thermo will be a Flex-based tool for making layouts, skins and styles
for Flex apps (MXML). Bordeaux is going to affect the Flash IDE perhaps.
