[Papervision3D] collada vs. *.3DS file format PERFORMANCE ???

I was playing with the Max3DS parser last night and I can't get the materials
form my 3DS file. I suspect it is because I did something wrong in my model
when I created it. Does anyone have any tips on what sort of materials are
supported in the 3DS format? I am currently using colormaterials, but they
show up as gray in PV3D and I can't seem to access them to swap them out.
The other strange thing is that I get numChildren=0 when I check it, even
though my model has 3 objects that trace when the model loads. Can anyone
shed any light on this? Honestly, I'm a Newb at using Max and I've probably
set up my model incorrectly.

Thanks,
Andy
