Hey,
I think the 3DS format supports animations, but I don't know if the
Max3DS.as parser can read them. Some things I've read recently seem to
suggest that 3DS is not the best format, but for basic meshes, it seems to
work ok.
As for zipping the DAE file, the load times will be shorter, but there is
still the issue of that pesky memory leak.
