[Red5] Performance understanding

I installed Wowza over the past couple days and noticed something. My
drawing (whiteboard) application is much more consistent in Wowza,
meaning steadier in communications but mush smoother in Red5. This
gives the appearance that Red4 is buffering somehow (by default
because I haven't set anything) whereas Wowza, is not buffering but is
slower in the communications and performance overall.
I don;t know what this means but it does provide insight into how the
various platforms operate. With Red5, I can draw smoothly (fast,
smooth curves) but there is a lag every few seconds where the report
cursor appears to stall, then jump. With Wowza, the motion is more
consistent, but also consistently slower meaning that the shape being
drawn remotely is less rounded and looks more like a series of
segments rather that a continuous line.
My question is, is Red5 buffered by default? If so, is there a way to
control the amount of buffering? Does anyone know about Wowza's
performance reputation? I would have though they would be very smooth.
FYI, FMS is very smooth and has no jumpiness on the same application.
