Just a reminder that if the previous programmer owns the copyright and
doesn't want that his application is modified, then you or anybody else
have no right to modify (and distribute) the application. Trying to do
that would definitely be a copyright violation.
If you cannot get the source (or at least suitable license for
decompiling) then you cannot use the software at all.
