No, you can use 7 and 8 SWF's - just make sure they're not compressed: 
**Compressed SWF's are reset to Flash version 6 by the current build. 
This will be fixed with the next binary release, it's fixed in the trunk 
already.

That will depend on how many bug reports we get over the next few weeks, 
I guess. All should work with F7/8 already but we'll probably find some 
quirks over time.

Making a new binary publicly available after every revision would be 
very tedious (we've had 6 revisions already since the 3.1.0.0 binary was 
released) so compiling at your own is the only way right now. It doesn't 
require any C knowledge, and it's only setting 1 environment variable 
and pressing a few buttons in Visual Studio. See:

I'm not sure about the plug-in. I coded something like that in Delphi 
once, I think - but I'm not sure if it ever saw light of day.. do you 
remember this Thomas? What I do know is that downloading is 'natively' 
supported through the swFile interface (createDownload, 
setDownloadFlags, stopDownload, startDownload).
