44.1 Hz is pretty low recording frequency, you probably mean KHz? ;)

I'm not in a position to test this at the moment, but have you tried
both VBR and CBR mp3s?

I'm fairly sure I've had CBR mp3s working, but it's been a long time
since I tried.
